Eglise Saint-Thomas, Strasbourg

Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Listen to the same organ Mozart used in 1778 at Eglise Saint-Thomas, a late-Gothic Protestant church. This church is internationally renowned for its historic and musically significant organs: the 1741 Silbermann organ played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1778, and a 1905 organ built by Fritz Haerpfer. The church's impressive collection includes a late-Gothic representation of Saint Michael, the second-largest fresco of its kind in France. Many of the medieval leaded windows are still intact, including the rose stained glass toward the front of the building. This Protestant church is also known for the famous, richly decorated sarcophagus of Bishop Adelochus (1130), and the huge, late-Baroque mausoleum of Marshall Maurice de Saxe (1777), created by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. Other remarkable monuments include the Renaissance tombstone of Nikolaus Roeder von Tiersberg (1510), which is notable for its realistic depiction of his decaying corpse.
