  We had a lunch stop in Sartene, on our way from Bonifacio to Ajaccio. This church is in the main square and adjacent to the very small old part of town. Worth a stop when exploring Sartene.  more »

  La chiesa parrocchiale dedicata a Santa Maria Assunta contiene alcuni tesori di cui alcuni sono classificati Monumenti Storici. Parte di questo ricco patrimonio è costituito da una statua in marmo della Madonna col Bambino risalente al XVI secolo, due dipinti, uno raffigurante l'Annunciazione (XVII secolo) e l'altro un Mater Dolorosa che incornicia il altare maggiore in marmo policromo importato dall'Italia (XVII secolo), e una serie di quattordici dipinti sulla Via Crucis offerti dall'imperatrice Eugenia. La croce e le catene esposte ci ricordano che qui, la processione del Catenacciu, che simboleggia l'ascesa di Cristo sul Calvario, si svolge la sera del Venerdì Santo.

  The parish church dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta contains some treasures of which some are classified Historical Monuments. Part of this rich heritage consists of a marble statue of Our Lady with the Child dating back to the 16th century, two paintings, one depicting the Annunciation (17th century) and the other a Mater Dolorosa framing the main altar in imported polychrome marble from Italy (17th century), and a series of fourteen paintings on the Way of the Cross offered by Empress Eugenia. The cross and the chains on display remind us that here, the procession of the Catenacciu, symbolizing Christ's ascent on Calvary, takes place on the evening of Good Friday.
