La Grotte des Demoiselles has served as, among other things, a hiding place and refuge for people from various walks of life. Exploring the cave was quite perilous until the 20th century, when it was outfitted with concrete stairs, walkways, sturdy railings, and extensive lighting. The name, which also has been "fairies' grotto," comes from a legend about a young shepherd who followed his lamb into the cave until he fell into a vast chamber known as the cathedral. Just before losing consciousness, he reportedly saw a vision of young ladies dancing and singing around him. When he awoke, he was outside the cave with his lamb.     Most impressive cave I've ever been in and I've seen plenty. The cathedral Hall is very impressive. Would have liked the guided tour to move a bit slower so I could soak it up a bit more. There are chairs on several places but there was no time. The guides English was non existand as is normal in France. Don't doubt, just go and visit.
