Trip Planner: Europe / France / Pays de la Loire / Loire-Atlantique / Nantes / Cathedrale de Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul
Cathedrale de Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul took 457 years to build. The ground was broken for this house of worship on the ruins of a Romanesque cathedral in 1434, but construction wasn’t completed until 1891. The French have John VI to thank for beginning the project and seeing the initial construction through a period of conflict in the mid-15th century. After his reign, the construction was often interrupted by revolutions and war. But the French weren’t willing to give up on the building, so after World WarII and a devastating fire in 1972, it underwent the restoration that gave birth to the majestic arches you’ll see above your head on a visit to this site. Gorgeous. The archways are intricately details. The columns are awesome. It gives of Very nice and inviting feeling. Nice to go in for mass or just to sit with your thoughts or prayers. Very beautiful and inspiring. 🙏
I'm not religious but the architecture is uplifting. Built centuries ago before electricity, engines or powered construction plant. The skill of human engineering, the detail and quality of craftsmanship never fails to amaze. Inspiring.
