Located on an imposing, porphyritic rock mass, Nature Reserve of Scandola is the marine portion of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica. The Elpa Nera Inlet and the Peninsula of Scandola make up two sections of the park with jagged sheer cliffs containing grottos flanked by numerous rock formations and almost inaccessible islets and coves formed by volcanic activity. The coastline is noted for its 900 m (2,950 ft) high red Rhyolite cliffs, more than 400 species of algae, architecturally interesting fortifications, and a handful of Roman sites.
