Fort Saint-Elme is a sturdy fortress of revolutionary architecture, designed to be effective against artillery and conventional assault. Notice that the walls are made extra thick to absorb artillery fire. Other design aspects make it difficult for troops to scale or otherwise breach the exterior. Like many French fortresses, it was designed to defend the Spanish border during the Thirty Years War. Centuries of conflict have made their mark on this fortress, including some buildings that were destroyed when the German navy occupied the area during World War II. Visit the museum to explore a full arsenal with armor, swords, shields, spears, firearms, and other artifacts, mostly from the Renaissance. We saw this Fort above our apartment every day and just had to walk uphill on a safe path to see inside. Surprised to see a road on the other side right up to the door! But we enjoyed the walk. Lots.... more »
Private fort you can visit with military exhibits. Fabulous place for a picnic. Great views in every direction. Nicest welcome in our lives. more »
it is advisable to either take the petite train to the top of the fort, it's a spectacular view around the coast, and the winding roads snaking up to the mountain a wonder. I would then advise to take time to walk around the fort as the train only stops for a few minutes before returning. you can then walk down if it's not too hot to enjoy the smell and scenery of the vineyards. It is about an hour back down towards Coullier, otherwise wait for the next train which will be about the same time.
Great views but not one for the true history fan.... It's privately owned and you can tell...
