Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou, Casteil

#7 of 86 in Historic Sites in Pyrenees-Orientales
Must see · Architectural Building · Religious Site
Atop a rocky peak, Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou is a historical abbey that dates back to the tenth century. An earthquake in 1428 caused severe damage. Much of the abbey was restored in the 20th century, resulting in the mostly intact structures you can visit now. The abbey church is actually made up of two superimposed churches. The lower one is dedicated to St. Mary, and the upper church is dedicated to St. Martin. Look closely at the upper church's construction, where you'll find three naves separated by monolithic columns. A small chapel houses the relics of St. Gaudérique. The cloister has been entirely altered from its original form, but you can read about the early construction. • This was our fourth visit to the Abbey and each time it has felt special. The walk up is steep and took me 50 minutes but someone younger and fitter can do it in 30. It feels more like a pigrimage...  more »
  • Saint Martin du Canigou is beautiful. It is a long walk to get there but it is worth it. You should defintely walk up to the view aboutt the Abbey. However, the tour is soul-destoying. Even more.....  more »
  • Concrete paved road up to the abbey, works for most ages from small to older. Be aware that vehicles may pass on occation as there are trips going to the abbey. A good tip would be to bring rain jacket or umbrella.
  • We've put off visiting the abbey many times because we didn't fancy the long steep climb. In March the weather isn't too hot, so it took less than 30 minutes to get to the top. The abbey tour is a bit long and it's in French, but the guide was charming and spoke slowly so I could follow most of what he said. The abbey is beautiful, but there isn't that much to see - just the cloisters and the abbey church. There are 2 viewpoints - a great view of Vernet les Bains and Canigou, or another steep climb to a wonderful view of the abbey itself. I'm glad I wore hiking boots as the path is slippery and dangerous
