A symbol of Cahors, Pont Valentre is a 14th-century fortified stone arch bridge crossing the Lot River. The medieval construction includes six gothic arches and three square towers with turret. The western tower hasn't survived. This bridge is part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Legend has it that the bridge's architect could not finish his work, so he sold his soul to the devil. Look for the carved stone devil trying to tear off the bridge's cornerstone, but failing; his fingers are embedded in the seams between the stones. Make Pont Valentre a centerpiece of your Cahors vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Cahors trip planner.

Said to be the best-preserved medieval bridge in Europe, this structure is really worth a detour. Even my architect-husband had never seen it except in photos and it was a delight to see and walk..... more »

...the rest of the mediaeval city is nowhere near as interesting or beautiful as the guide books and online media would lead you to believe. more »

Ancient bridge with magnificent views. Admire the cliffs and spend a few moments at sunrise or sunset for contemplative thoughts. Then, stop by the nearby restaurants.
