Find a gemstone in an active mine at Amethyst Mine Lapland. A deposit of broken rocks at the top of the hill form the hunting grounds for your own piece of the purple amethyst gemstone. Purchase tickets at the Lampivaara Cafe prior to your arrival, and if there's time you can order a hot drink here. The attraction is open in all weather conditions throughout the year; however, the entrance fee is higher in the winter to cover the cost of transport, which involves a large snowplow pulling a train carriage to the mining site. If you don't have any luck treasure hunting, stop by the shop that sells gemstones from the mine, located near the Lapland Hotel outside the attraction's entrance. An easy 30 - 45 min walk up a gentle 1.5 km slope from the base brings you to the mine during summer. You have the option of going up slope in a snow vehicle but only during winter. A guide explained.... more »

Great experience, the staff is very friendly , first a little history and what is amethyst. And after we go digging and if you're lucky you can found some amethyst. And I found some little piece .

The people here at the amethyst mine know their stuff and have somehow managed to find a compromise between making a profit and at the same time being completely sustainable. The tour was very interesting and entertaining, and at the end they let you bring home one piece of amethyst that you dig out yourself!
