Observe penguins in their natural environment at Gypsy Cove the most accessible wildlife habitat near Stanley. The Magellanic penguins make their homes around the heathlands surrounding the pristine white sands of the bay, and can be seen in their droves in season. We caught the shuttle from the visitor's information centre downtown for the 15 minute ride to Gypsy Cove on Yorke Bay. It was a nice place to view penguins. There was a pleasant path to walk... more »

A magical place where you can get upfront and personal with the penguins, but please keep behind the blue ropes. According to the Falklands Tourist Board it is just 6.5 km (4 miles) from Stanley and is the most accessible wildlife site from the capital city. It is part of the Cape Pembroke peninsula which is a National Nature Reserve. The small bay with its white sand beach is sheltered from prevailing winds. Magellanic penguins, also known as Jackass because of their braying sounds, breed here, nesting underground in burrows. Other birdlife includes black-crowned night-herons, oystercatchers, long-tailed meadowlark, two-banded plovers, Falklands flightless steamer duck, upland and kelp geese. Sea lions occasionally visit.
