Stevns Klint
Stevns Klint is a white chalk cliff located some 6km southeast of Store Heddinge on the Danish island of Zealand. Stretching 17km along the coast, it is of geological importance as one of the best exposed Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) boundaries in the world. Subject to frequent erosion, the cliff rises to a height of up to 40m.A visit to Stevns Klint represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Store Heddinge tour itinerary planner to plot your vacation.
The cliff reveals sections from the uppermost part of the Maastrichtian stage (72 to 66 million years ago) and from the lowermost part of the Danian stage (66 to 62 million years ago). A black layer of fish clay, a few centimeters thick, containing iridium clearly marks the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. The layers can also be seen deep in the tunnels of Stevnsfortet, a cold-war fortress constructed in 1953. The bryozoa chalk in the cliff is highly shock resistant to both conventional and nuclear weapons.
In 2008 Cold War Museum Stevns Fortress opened to the public. It features a large exhibition of military equipment and a 1.5-hour guided tour in the large underground system of the fortress. The underground system of the fortress features of tunnels, living quarters and command centers, including a hospital and even a chapel. There are also two ammunition depots for its two cannons. The tunnels are 18– below the surface, dug deep into the chalk of Stevns. The top secret fortress was built in 1953 and remained operational until 2000.

Beautiful area for a quick day trip to a UNESCO World Heritage site. There is an old church that you can explore before heading down some steep steps to see the cliff. FYI: The beach is currently closed for some work. This is a chalk cliff and one of the sites where you can see the geologic historical record (a strip of dark gray rock in between the lighter rock) of the meteor impact that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. There is a large open field where you can picnic (there are some picnic tables), a park for children to play, and a small restaurant for a quick drink, bite, or treat. Parking is 40 krone. If you like nature and the outdoors, this is a place for you.

Really pretty cliffs with a rocky beach. Going down to the beach is quite steep and can get slippery, so be careful! Also plenty of very easy trails along the tops of the cliffs with amazing vistas.
