The Land of Legends, Centre for Historical-Archaeological Research and Communication is a 106-acre archaeological open-air museum situated in the Lejre Municipality, few kilometres west of Roskilde.

Land of Legends was founded in 1964 by ethnologist Hans-Ole Hansen and comprise reconstructions of an Iron Age village and sacrificial bog, a Viking market place, a Stone Age campsite, an 18th-century farmstead and various grave monuments. The historical artisan workshops work to reproduce historical handicraft. Gardens, pastures and fields are the natural scenario of activities and reconstructions. At the Land of Legends Lejre, the activities for the public utilizes previous techniques, known from historical documents, archaeological evidence or experimental archaeology.

Each summer many families spend a week of their holidays in the Iron Age village, the farm cottages and the Stone Age campsite. They dress in period costume and take on the role of peopling the reconstructed areas, while trying to live using the techniques of the past.

This is very big and good outdoor-museum. I liked the Stone-age and the Iron-age villages. Was a bit disappointed of the viking village. The long house was very huge, but sterile. Also I expected... more »

Loved it here. Would love to come one day when no one else was around to take pictures but was an amazing experience still. Its right on the edge of a cliff, natural and situated with amazing views

This was an amazing experience. We had no idea what we were going to see when we arrived but it far exceeded our expectations. Pro tip: arrive early and use the boats before it gets busy or you will have to wait for a long time. We ended up leaving after waiting for 20+ minutes. The bus picks you up at the train station and drops you off RIGHT at the museum, and comes every hour. This place is a must see!!!
