Hammershus, Sandvig

#1 of 100 in Things to do in Bornholm
Must see · Ruin · Historic Site
Hammershus played a central role in the centuries-long battle for power between Danish bishops and kings. The castle, surrounded by rings of fortifications, was erected in the 13th century on a cliff 74 m (243 ft) above sea level. It was long believed that the castle was built for the archbishop of Lund, but it is more likely that it served as a royal residence and a base for the Danish crusades. Walk along the remains of the great stone wall stretching 750 m (2,460 ft) around the castle grounds. From a grand "mantel" tower, you can take in a view of the coastline.
