Schreckenstein Castle or, less commonly, Strekov Castle (Czech: Hrad Střekov, German: Burg Schreckenstein), is a well preserved ruined castle perched atop a cliff above the River Elbe near the town of Ústí nad Labem (formerly Aussig a. d. Elbe) in the Central Bohemian Highlands in Czechia. It was built in the 14th century to protect the waterway and collect duties on transported goods, the castle is renowned for its impressive views. It has enchanted a variety of visiting artists, most notably Goethe, Richard Wagner, and Karel Hynek Mácha.Discover how to plan a Usti nad Labem trip in just a few steps with Inspirock's itinerary builder.
The castle is especially well known from the painting by Ludwig Richter called Passing the Schreckenstein (Überfahrt am Schreckenstein) which hangs in the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden.
The castle is sited on a steep, monolithic, clinkstone rock that rises steeply to 100 metres above the River Elbe and is the symbol of North Bohemia. Large parts of the castle have survived or been rebuilt, including the bergfried, palas and castle walls.

A fantastic castle Part in ruins part still intact I was visiting around 10am and only saw 4 other people Being perched on the cliff side and over looking the river Elbe Not a huge castle ,but this adds to its charm You can easily while away an hour or so There are some great original parts still left and some good write ups but not too much so you lose intrest The views as you can imagine are amazing I really like the fact you have to ring the ball to be let out after you have finished You can get a laminated a4 numbered description to take around , but all points have the summary I liked the knights hall , with spears and cost of arms along with a suit of armour .... Worth a visit and helps you with a look into the past but without getting to bigger down Good walking around the remains Wear good solid footwear
Beautiful view! Atmospheric ancient castle. Nice point for photosession
