A peculiar mix of history, natural beauty, reenactment and a restaurant, Palenque de los Cimarrones is a popular tourist stop off, set within a majestic cave. A refuge for runaway slaves through the centuries, the "Cueva de San Miguel" is nestled in the center of a mogote and now serves as a plantation slavery display. Take a 270 m (885.8 ft) walk through the murky caves to lines of several rustic cottages, decorated with the symbolic colors of Afro-Cuban Yoruba deities. A re-enacted cimmaronne folk dance will greet you at the entrance to the restaurant, where Cuban food and rum and guava cocktails are on offer. This was my first cave experience and even then it didn't meet the expectations. The walk through the cave was short and it ended way before I anticipated. A dance performance on the other side of the cave was a nice surprise though. The whole experience including the horse cart ride was 4CUC per person. However the surrounding were peaceful and beautiful. If you are in Vinales you should go to this area even just for a drink at the cave bar.
