Find your bearings on trails through thick, densely populated forest at Varahicacos Ecological Reserve, a nature preserve on the northeastern end of Hicacos Peninsula. A diverse and magical array of sights await you in this 3 sq km (1.15 sq mi) stretch of land. Follow sparsely signed trails to what is thought to be the oldest living thing in Cuba--the “Patriarcha” Cactus, a 500-year-old giant cactus tree. Head deeper into the reserve to find two caves: “Ambrosio,” a mesmerising, vast maze filled with fruit bats and decorated with ancient pictographs dating back 2,000 years, and “Musulmanes,” a smaller cave containing indigenous human remains that date back to 500 BC. Be sure to bring plenty of water. See Varahicacos Ecological Reserve and all Varadero has to offer by arranging your trip with our Varadero trip app.

For people that hike on a regular basis the trail is fairly underwhelming. However it does have some beautiful rock formations and a bit of storytelling scattered along the 15 sites you'll past which should be appreciated. The reserve is a self-guided trail that will cost you 5 CUCand will takes about 45 minutes to complete. You are given a paper map listing each sites on the ecological reserve you'll past. The main attraction is a small little cave with an uncovered skeleton. Very cool, in my opinion. I just wished there was more of this to see. I also loved all the little lizards the length of your index finger scurrying along the path. However, I suggest not to go in the afternoon, since it was very hot and humid with flies biting you on every turn. Maybe it's better in the morning when it is a bit cooler. The trail itself is very tight with not much room to maneuver with many tight turns, so good shoes is a must. Be careful of the many holes along the trail as you can easily step through one by accident.

A little pricey at 5CUC per person. The trail is rocky and uneven, even has holes you can fall into. Expect to spend about 1.5 hours walking the trail and crawling into the caves. The lagoon is not worth looking at. Well signed and informative
