See where the town of Trinidad made its money during a visit to Valle de los Ingenios, a network of three interconnected valleys located 8 km (5 mi) to the east of town. During the 19th century, the valleys were home to over 50 sugar cane mills, and the ruins of the estates that built up around them can still be seen today. Some of the most impressive, preserved sites include bell towers and warehouses, slave quarters and manor houses. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, the valley's natural landscape and slowly decaying colonial sites combine well to form atmospheric and evocative scenes.
