Trip Planner: Central America / Costa Rica / Province of Guanacaste / Rincon de La Vieja National Park
Explore the volcanic geological features and tropical forests of Rincon de La Vieja National Park, a 14,084 hectare (34,800 acre) national park. Two active and one dormant volcano dominate the landscape here, and provide the main focal points for a range of hikes. The park protects areas of montane and dwarf cloud forest, as well as an extensive diversity of wildlife, including sloths, tapirs, pumas, jaguars, and howler and spider monkeys. Note that crater climbs on the two active volcanoes may not be allowed at the time of your visit; check in advance. In that case, surrounding fumaroles and hot springs add more than enough excitement to the adventure. Put Rincon de La Vieja National Park at the forefront of your travel plans using our Rincon de La Vieja route planner.

This is the first time I have seen bubbling mud from a volcano. The park has several spots of bubbling water and steam. Interesting particularly with the surrounding fauna and forest. Lots of... more »
Really beautiful waterfall and nice hike. We were offered three hike options when we went: 1) a 2-hour looped hike that offers mud pots (and hot springs if you follow an extension which would increase the total time to 6 hours) 2) a 3-4 hour hike to a beautiful waterfall often found in most photos 3) a 4-5 hour hike to a different waterfall (there are no photos of it) known as the secret waterfall because it’s tricky to find. Given our time constraint we went with (2) and we definitely loved it! The hike was through some forests (definitely bring bug spray! I got devoured!) and there were also plateaus where you could catch a beautiful view.
You do have to pay before actually entering the park and then after driving to the main info building you can either do a quick hike to the waterfall (in my pictures) for a few more dollars, or actually pay to enter the park and go on a longer hike. If you dont have a whole day, I definitely recommend just seeing the waterfall. The shorter trails in the park mostly consist of "mud pots".
