Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary
A non-profit organization, Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates, and releases local animals into the natural habitat. Tours lasting between 1 and 1.5 hours provide information about the sanctuary's aims, objectives, and rescue efforts. Visitors have a chance to meet many of the sanctuary's residents, including sloths, spider monkeys, capuchins, anteaters, raccoons, parrots, toucans, porcupines, and kinkajous. You'll learn about their history, biology, and conservation needs from fully trained tour guides. Although you'll be able to take photos there, keep in mind that visitors cannot touch animals in accordance to Costa Rica's laws. Donations go directly and completely to running the sanctuary. It is recommended that visitors have a 4x4 vehicle to get up the hill. VISITORS MUST MAKE A RESERVATION USING THE ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM, PLEASE SEE WEBSITE. Unfortunately it was not what we expected, the sanctuary is very zoo like with distressed animals and small cages. As basic volunteers it is the job of cleaning and placing food in cages twice a day. If the car is available they might take you to the beach once a week. Beautiful people and good accommodation. But for 700 dollars for 2 weeks i was hoping to be more first hand, learn more and have various jobs. I would not recommend if you are an experienced volunteer.

As a science-based based and humane animal behavior consultant and trainer that is focused on low-stress environments, enrichment, and handling, I was incredibly impressed with this sanctuary. It is evident that the staff really cares about the animals, provide excellent enclosures, and enrichment. I discussed some behaviors of some of the monkeys that seemed stressed and got their background story that explains some maladaptive behavior and what they're doing to help the animals.
