Known previously as Zhongdian, Shangri-La County gained its current name in an attempt by city officials to promote tourism. The old town district, largely destroyed in a fire in 2014, has been partially rebuilt; here, old wooden homes, Tibetan Buddhist temples and shrines, and large monastery rank among the top attractions in Shangri-La County. High up in the mountains, the city has a noticeable divide between the influence of its Han and Tibetan communities, and travelers mainly use it as a stop-off point during explorations of the Tibetan towns dotted around the wider region.
