Admire the panorama of Lake Dianchi and Kunming from Kunming Dragon Gate, an observation deck and a grotto complex perched on a steep cliff. Carved into Western Hills and part of the highest temple in the area, the colorful gate stands at an altitude of 2,500 m (8,000 ft), overlooking a precipitous cliff. Inside the cliff, 18th-century monks created a number of caves, corridors, and pavilions. Take a chairlift up to the top of the mountain and then walk down to the gate via stone stairs through scenic evergreen woods. There is a restaurant near the site.     Warning: if you are elderly or out of shape then this can be a strenuous climb to the top. Go on a weekday when it is not so crowded. We had to stand in quite a few lines on the way up and down.  more »
