Explore the hilltop ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, a 17th-century Buddhist monastery with a storied heritage. Surrounded by magnificent mountains, a well-preserved white brick watchtower dominates the scenery. The complex, perched over the Paro River Valley, ranks among the most important archeological sites in Bhutan. Built in 1649 to commemorate and capitalize on the victory against Tibetan invaders in controlling an important trade route, the dzong features a false entrance that lured Tibetans into a dead-end courtyard during their retreat. Some visitors have reported renovations in progress; you can still take a pleasant hike around the area, but check before going.     This is the oldest Dzong and in a very traditional village. Following destruction by fire in the 1950's reconstruction was commenced in 2016 and continues. Thus we were unable to enter, but only view....  more »

    A Ruin fort which is being rebuilt exactly the old fashioned way using wood. Great views of the snow caped mountains from the fort top.

    Drukgyel Dzong seems to be a small and old Dzong 10 KM from Paro which is under renovation when we visited. Entry is blocked and construction is going on. Dosnt seem interesting..
