Citadelle (Citadel)
Dating all the way back to the Roman era, Citadelle (Citadel), also known as "Castle of Namur," serves as one of the largest fortresses in Europe. Originally a protective space for military postings, the castle today is a tourist attraction and occasionally is rented out for events. Walk through the premises of the castle and explore the original rugged structure of the fortress walls. Next, go through the underground passageways, or "The Termite Nest of Europe," below the castle's grounds. Walking through the outdoor gardens is a great way to end your tour and gain some magnificent views of the surrounding city. If you don't want to walk the grounds, sign up for a Segway tour with a guide. Put Citadelle (Citadel) into our Namur attractions planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Namur.

Very nice tourist centre! Beautiful museum about the history of Namur and the function of the Citadel, very friendly staf. The underground guided tour in the tunnels was interesting and interactive. Tours are in French, Dutch, English and I think even in Spanish. You can also visit the old theater and castle.

The Citadel is like a huge park which you are free to roam. There are lot of stairs to traverse to get to the fantastic city views. Great place to picnic. There are not so many buildings left in the citadel. There are some cafes and a perfume shop, also a museum of its history. The museum is mostly reading with few artifacts. At the museum, you can get a small guided train tour of the citadel which would be good for those of less mobility and also an underground tunnel your. This tour has lots of steps. You go down to explore the tunnels dug to move troops and fight in the citadel. The Citadel was used by the military us through 1972, so a lot of history was seen in these tunnels even in WW1 &2. Bring a jacket for this tour.
