Sanctuary Wood, Ieper (Ypres)

Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Honoring the Canadian troops who fought at Ypres Salient in World War I, Sanctuary Wood marks the spot where the troops executed their first planned offensive against German troops. During the attack the Canadians regained territory at the top of the hill, denying the German troops a view of Ypres. Located just outside the city, terraced gardens lead up to the a gray stone block that bears the Canadian insignia. Walk up to the monument for an excellent view over the town and the landscaped gardens. • Best museum I’ve been to here. It is authentic and feels as such. Hope for rain when you go for an even more authentic experience. What a treasure. It is literally a piece of history. If you have to choose a museum ... this is the one.
  • Cool museum for a small price. The 3D photos are very cool and give a good feel of how things must have been. I also liked the large amount of weapons they had on display. Could do with some more background storytelling though
