Trip Planner: Europe / Belgium / Flanders / West Flanders Province / Ieper (Ypres) / Ramparts Cemetery
Assigned to the United Kingdom by King Albert I of Belgium, Ramparts Cemetery began during World War I as a burial ground for fallen soldiers. Look over the cemetery to see white gravestones resting quietly among manicured grasses and trees. Almost all of the identities of the fallen are known, with the exception of 10 graves that hold the remains of unknown soldiers. A notable set of graves are those of six Australian soldiers who were killed by the same shell. Take your time reading the names and paying tribute to the troops who lost their lives. Ramparts Cemetery reviews
A very peaceful spot, perfect for a final resting place. A short and pleasant walk through the Menin Gate, mostly through a park. Or the number 1 bus runs to/from the town centre to nearby. more »
Beautifully situated WW1 memorial overlooking the water. Can be found just next to Lille gate - 10 minute walk from the Flanders Fields museum, or around 15/20 minutes if you walk around the ramparts.... more »
(Detailed review below) Ambience - 5/5 Accessibility - 2/5 Cost - 5/5 Ambience - A small but well kept war cemetery, with a beautiful view of a lake where folks can go boating. Accessibility - There are multiple ways to access this cemetery but the one I took wasn’t wheelchair friendly so my review may not be very accurate. Cost - It’s free!
A small and moving First World War cemetery, beautifully situated on the riverbanks and accessible via a pleasant walk on the town ramparts. Quiet and peaceful, very moving.
