Hill 60, Ieper (Ypres)

#2 of 31 in Historic Sites in Ieper (Ypres)
Battlefield · Historic Site
Hill 60 commemorates the site of a major British underground offensive that required Australian troops to tunnel deep in the earth. A concrete machine gun bunker still stands and some of the trenches have been restored so that you can get a feel for what it must have been like in the battle of Ypres. Much of the battlefield, which would have been muddy and covered in tunnels and trenches, has come alive again with trees and grass. Hike or bike along the trails that cut through the field, leading you past memorials to soldiers and information plaques describing the Australian mining squad's tunneling work. To better appreciate the significance of the site, consider reserving a guide, who will give you in-depth information on the battle and the military strategies played out there.
