Standing on a patch of land known in Barbados as God's acre, St. James Parish Church is considered one of the four oldest surviving churches in the nation. The original wooden structure of the church was first constructed in 1628, with stone lain in 1874 that still stands today. Today, this peaceful sanctuary contains various beautiful monuments and pieces of historical significance, including Barbados' oldest bell, preserved as a monument that predates the famous Liberty Bell of America. The condition of the church is pristine considering its age as well as the tropical location in which it is positioned. The area is frequented by tropical storms but from the general appearance of the church you would not be able to tell. The reason this church is so well maintained is because of the great care taken by the volunteers and care takers. The welcoming team were very warm and had a lot of on depth information about the history of the church. They were also very friendly and were happy to share details about the church. The parking lot is organized considering the crowds of cruise ship travelers and tourists. Would highly recommend visiting.

Awesome place to visit to enjoy its history. The oldest church in Barbados. Amazing architecture and beautiful wood arts. You can sit down where US President Ronald Reagan and his lovely wife Nancy sat for Easter!
