Shahid Minar, Dhaka City

#11 of 96 in Things to do in Dhaka City
Monument · Educational Site
Appreciate the importance of Shahid Minar, a monument where history, architecture, and art meet to honor the martyrs who fought for the recognition of their native language. In 1952, during the Bengali language movement demonstrations, the police force opened fire on protestors who were fighting for the official status of the Bengali language in Bangladesh. Existing monuments dedicated to the martyrs were demolished, with the monument you see today being rebuilt after the Bangladesh Liberation War. The monument, made of marble and colored in red and white, features Bengali poetry written in iron letters. • Meaningful Structure and it is situated in Dhaka University Campus. Recommended for a short visit on the way to old Dhaka.  more »
  • A strange monument in the middle of the chaos. But I liked the small tea stalls near the monument. I guess it has some history, because I see a lot of pictures with this building.  more »
