Walhalla Goldfields Railway, Walhalla

Tour · Scenic Railroad
Take a ride back in time on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway. Originally serving as transportation for early 20th-century gold miners, this scenic train sat defunct for decades before interest groups and the local government revived it in the 1990s. Trains once again carry visitors between the former gold-mining town of Walhalla and Thomson and back again. As you sit behind heritage locomotives acquired from elsewhere in Australia, enjoy open-air views of Stringer's Creek and Stringer's Gorge along the 4 E29km (2.5 mi) journey. The whole trip takes about 20 minutes one-way and 60 minutes round-trip. If you plan to visit in summer, make sure that area wildfires have not temporarily closed the railway. • A friend and I came to Walhalla last weekend to go for a hike and check out the town. While looking at the railway we stopped for a chat with Tom and Andrew, two volunteers who work on the railway, and it was the highlight of our Walhalla experience. They were extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of the railway and their passion for trains and the Walhalla railway/region was plain to see. Being able to listen to their stories and knowledge really connected us to the town and gave even more depth to our experience. I really want to say thank you again to Tom and Andrew, who were polite, friendly and genuine! The railway are really lucky to have such passionate volunteers. The station and train itself are in really great condition and it's a fantastic spot to go for some regional history. I hope to come again soon!
  • Walhalla: Thanks for the much needed break. A 12km hike which saw me gravitate to poverty point bridge (I wonder why?), must say I enjoyed my solitude. Family stayed at the coach house, great spot. Ghost tour a ripper, the train a gem. Horse shoe bend tunnel trek bellissimo! Still a fan after many visits. Get up there people's.
