The sandstone bridge was constructed by convict labour, and is the third oldest bridge still in use in Australia. Commissioned by Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur, the bridge was designed by architect John Lee Archer, with the convict work team including two stonemasons, James Colbeck and Daniel Herbert, the latter being credited with the intricate carvings along both sides of the bridge.
The bridge was registered on the now-defunct Register of the National Estate in 1978.
The bridge is listed as a National Engineering Landmark by Engineers Australia as part of its Engineering Heritage Recognition Program.
Ross Bridge reviews
We love stopping in Ross on the way up the highway - it is a nicer spot than Campbell Town. The bridge is beautiful and a must see on your way up or down the Highway. more »
This 1830's convict built bridge is a beautiful example of the convict stonemason's art. It was chiselled out by hand by British convicts transported from Britain. It is so strong it is still in use..... more »
Absolutely stunning!! Ross is a beautiful historical town with so many beautiful photo opportunities! The duckies there also loved to be fed! If your going, try and buy some duck pellets you can feed them proper food
Probably the most misunderstood treasure that's in Tasmania. A super fun day for all the family. Picturesque grounds surrounded by natural beauty enables a visual extravaganza and the guides top it off with educational talks about were your standing. Loved it.
