  • The Government Gardens at Port Arthur were originally established in the late 1840s as an outdoor leisure area for the military and civil officials at the penal settlement. The existing gardens is a historically re-created landscape using an 1858 survey and extensive research of historical photographs and investigations including soil analysis, geophysical and archaeological investigations. As you can see from the photographs here, it's a very pleasant walk through the gardens along the path leading up to the Government Cottage and it's just as beautiful overlooking the gardens from the front veranda of the Cottage.
