Overlooking the beautiful Government Gardens at the Historic Settlement of Port Arthur is the Government Cottage. This brick building was built in 1836 for the head of the convict department, the Comptroller General and for visiting dignitaries. It was destroyed by the devastating bushfires in the area back in 1895 and again in 1897. The photographs included here, show the ruins of the cottage as it stands today and for comparison, I have also included historical photos of the Government Cottage back as it was in the 1870s and 1900s.
