Salmon Ponds Heritage Hatchery and Gardens, New Norfolk

#2 of 14 in Things to do in New Norfolk
Water Body · Hidden Gem · Garden
Despite its name, Salmon Ponds Heritage Hatchery and Gardens serves as a trout hatchery, the oldest one in the Southern Hemisphere actually. The lovely historic buildings reside within a 19th-century English-style landscape. The ponds are stocked with rainbow and tiger trout and, true to the venue's name, Atlantic salmon. Some of the fish weigh up to 8 kg (17 lbs). Watch as the fish splash around the pond and compete for fish food. Follow the Riverside Walk between 140-year-old trees and exotic plants to reach The Sanctuary fishing shack. There’s a Pancakes by the Pond restaurant serving savory and sweet European crepes.
