Not just another observation deck, Mount Nelson Lookout was once a signal station, built in 1811 to relay messages to and from Port Arthur. Today, this popular attraction provides panoramic views of the city and the surrounding region, and includes a convenient café, sheltered picnic tables, barbeques, and a large parking area. This is also the site of the Truganini Reserve, named after a woman believed to be the last full-blooded Tasmanian aboriginal. This area of protected bushland is open to visitors, who can hike trails following a creek and leading through lush eucalyptus vegetation. Stop by the lookout to take photographs, get some exercise, and enjoy a picnic with a postcard-like view. A must-see - stunning views and often winds to match! and a bit more accessible than going all the way up Mt Wellington. Just take the southern outlet road and turn off at the signs to Mt Nelson. more »

Lovely reserve with wiggly little tracks. Not many signposts though.

Did the signal station walk from sandy bay. Was a good walk (warning it is all up hill and slightly rocky in places) . Met an Echidna half way up which made it well worth it.
