Josephine's Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage, Coober Pedy

#7 of 27 in Things to do in Coober Pedy
Wildlife Area · Nature / Park
Feed, pet, and photograph kangaroos at Josephine's Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage, which also includes an aboriginal art gallery with one-of-a-kind art pieces, available for shipping anywhere in the world. This unusual kangaroo orphanage, combining several tourist attractions in one, primarily cares for animals injured by cars, an unfortunate but frequent occurrence in this part of the world. Below the orphanage you can also visit a mine, where you can learn about various forms of opal mining. The on-site museum is known for its displays of black opals, brought here from some of Australia’s major opal mines. Don’t leave without a stop at the well-stocked gift shop, selling souvenirs for every budget, including didgeridoos, opal jewelry, and aboriginal art reproductions. • Slid open the unlocked door with a Please Open sign on it and started looking at the art. After 5 mins a man came and aggressively confronted us “what are you f***ing doing in here, we’re closed...  more »
  • Local art, baby kangaroos and the most lovely owners. This place deserves a visit, if only to chat to the owners and hear all they do for the injured wildlife around here. Great work.  more »
  • Me and 3 mates had a sick time here, Terry was a great guy who really was passionate for what he did. Highlight of our stay in Coober Pedy!
  • This place is something special! Josephine is an amazing woman! You can see the love and passion she has for these beautiful animals. She has amazing stories to tell and I learned some new roo facts. Make sure to make a donation as they are non-profit and solely rely on tourism to care for injured wildlife! ❤
