Sovereign Hill, Ballarat

#1 of 236 in Historic Sites in Victoria
Must see · History Museum · Historic Site
Ever wondered what it's like to be a miner in a gold rush? Sovereign Hill recreates the experience for you. This open-air museum in Golden Point presents the area as it was after prospectors discovered gold there in 1851. As you stroll down Main Street, stop into the historically rendered metal workshops, schools, apothecary, bank, saloon, and post office and speak with historical interpreters dressed as townsfolk and prospectors from long ago. Tents and buildings invoking this past era surround the creek, where you can pan for real gold. See how to melt gold into bullion bars at the Gold Pour. You might even strike it rich, paying for your entire vacation! Put Sovereign Hill and other Ballarat attractions into our Ballarat trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Loved visiting Sovereign Hill again. It's a been a few years and it's still a great place to take the kids. Lots of things to do and see. The weather wasn't the best when we visited but we were still able to see lots of the attractions and exhibits. Kids loved the gold panning, horse rides and getting dressed up for an old colonial photo. (Photo around $80.00) but well worth the price.
  • Loved going to sovereign hill. Lots of things to see and do. Great gift shops and friendly service. Good value for money as well. People dressed up in old fashioned clothing was a nice touch too. Will definitely come back.
